European Investment Bank is seeking to recruit an Associate Banking & Finance Lawyer

The European Investment Bank is seeking to recruit for its Directorate, Legal Directorate (JU) - Legal Department - Operations 2 (JU/OPS 2) -Outside Europe B Division (OEU-B) - at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a (Associate) Banking and Finance Lawyer. This is a full-time, temporary position, at grade 4/5.  

The term of this contract will be 2 years; as this is a temporary replacement assignment, no extension or conversion of the contract is foreseen.

Panel interviews are anticipated for beginning of April 2021.

The Outside Europe B Division (OEU-B) is currently dealing with the legal documentation and legal issues for projects in the following countries: Turkey, Central Asia, Balkans and Eastern Neighbours. The (Associate) Banking and Finance Lawyer, internally referred to as (Associate) Officer Legal Services, will assist the Head of Division, together with other legal advisers, in providing legal support to the operational directorates, carrying out work related to all tasks within the remit of the division.

The European Ombudsman inquiry into the Commission’s handling of a request for text messages between its President and the CEO of a pharmaceutical company is a wake-up call for all EU institutions about ensuring accountability in an era of instant messaging. One year after the initial request by a journalist, the Commission has still not clarified whether messages reported to concern major vaccine procurement deals exist and whether the public is entitled to see them. The Ombudsman had asked the Commission, in a finding of maladministration in January, to conduct a more thorough search for the text messages. The Commission’s recent response failed to say whether it had looked directly and correctly for the text messages and if not, why not. Dismissal of a public-sector employee for having “Liked” Facebook posts: Violation of her right to freedom of expression

Ιn Chamber's judgment in the case of Melike v. The Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) is deeply shocked by the death of Turkish lawyer Ebru Timtik on 27 August after a 238 days hunger strike. Lawyers Ebru Timtik and Aytaç Ünsal, respectively sentenced to 13 and 6 months and 11 years and 6 months in prison, decided to go on an unlimited hunger strike to denounce their unfair trial as well as the unfair trial of several dozens of Turkish lawyers. Prison overcrowding remains a problem in Europe: Council of Europe’s annual penal statistics for 2023

Prison overcrowding continues to be an acute and persistent problem in a significant number of European prison administrations, according to the Council of Europe’s Annual Penal Statistics on Prison Populations ( SPACE I ) for 2023. In countries with over 500,000 inhabitants, twelve prison administrations reported having more inmates than places available in January 2023. Overall, in Europe, the number of prisoners per 100 places available grew by 2% from 31 January 2022 to 31 January 2023 (from 91.7 to 93.5 inmates). Seven prison administrations reported a prison density of more than 105 inmates per 100 places available, indicating severe overcrowding: Cyprus (166 inmates per 100 places), Romania (120), France (119), Belgium (115), Hungary (112), Italy (109) and Slovenia (107).
